Abstract
This lecture is a fast-paced technical introduction to iSCSI and storage networking applications that can leverage familiar and affordable TCP/IP infrastructures.

iSCSI is an industry standard implementation of the SCSI storage protocol mapped to TCP/IP frames. iSCSI allows a Gigabit Ethernet connection to serve as a data storage interconnect.

iSCSI enables a variety of applications, including:
  • Storage Area Networks (SANs)

  • High-speed file sharing (next generation NAS)

  • Data replication

  • High-speed backup and restore

  • Bare-metal backup and restore
Topics Include
  • Essentials of storage networking

  • Files, blocks, file systems, metadata, SAN, and NAS

  • Benefits of IP for carrying storage traffic

  • iSCSI host connections: TOEs, TNICs, SNICs, software drivers

  • iSCSI performance issues

  • iSCSI storage devices

  • Integrating iSCSI with existing SCSI, ATA, and Fibre Channel storage

  • Turbo-charging your tape backup system

  • "Continuous" or realtime backup solutions

  • Other Ethernet-based SAN solutions

  • Next generation NAS and high speed file sharing
Intended Audience
This lecture is technical in nature and is best suited for people with a hands-on familiarity with Ethernet networks, servers, and storage devices. Students include system administrators, storage architects, backup system administrators, network consultants, and network managers.
