| Abstract |

Server
consolidation is a hot topic in IT right now. Everyone is talking
consolidation. What does it really mean to consolidate servers?
If consolidation is such a desirable thing, why did we spread out
so much in the first place, and, when we are done consolidating, are
we going to switch gears and start diversifying again? What is the
role of storage consolidation in the context of server consolidation?
Do we really need both or can we consolidate one without the other?
This lecture delivers the technical insight that one needs in order
to successfully consolidate servers. We start out with storage consolidation
and explain the range of technologies that allow you to rein in your
storage devices, dole out storage from centralized pools, and ensure
fault-tolerance. We go on to explain how to achieve suitable performance
after reducing your CPU and I/O processing head count.
Finally, we explain how to virtualize your storage resources so that
you can cope with changing needs without going through another major
re-architecture. Virtualization is a big buzz-word in the computer
industry, but we will make sure you leave with a crystal clear understanding
of what it is and how it might apply to your environment.
At the end of the lecture we will return to the major question in
a server or storage consolidation, which is whether it will provide
a lower TCO in the end. You will understand the factors that contribute
to the cost of maintaining servers and storage, and how they are affected
by consolidating those resources. |

| Topics
Include |
- End user and business drivers behind consolidation
- Assessing your current situation and predicting your needs
- Server consolidation vs. storage consolidation
- Factors in deciding on number/type of servers
- Justifying or ruling out storage area networks
- Comparing NAS solutions to one another and to common file servers
- Hybrids of SAN and NAS
- Block-level and file-level storage virtualization
- Microsoft's distributed file system
- Calculating total cost of ownership (TCO) in different scenarios
- TOE cards (TCP offload engines)
- Fault tolerance
Students will leave the lecture with a broad understanding of the
technologies and techniques for reducing server head count. Hopefully
you will be surprised by how simple and affordable many of the solutions
can be. |

| Intended
Audience |
 |
| This lecture
is technical in nature, but it discusses costs and business benefits
as well. It assumes a background in configuring servers and/or networks.
It will appeal most to technical project managers, IT directors, and
storage administrators. |
